Why Earn a Sport Management Degree in Ohio?
Sports Degrees Online recently had the chance to interview Professor Brian Hofman of Ohio Northern University about why Ohio is a great place to pursue a Sport Management Degree. Professor Hofman explains,
Dr. Brian Hofman, Ohio Northern University“Ohio is a great place to get a sport management degree for many reasons. First, when it comes to professional sports, Ohio has eight major professional teams which always offer opportunities for sport jobs and the ability to tour facilities, attend a game, volunteer for an event, or listen to experts in those sports.
“Additionally, Ohio has many minor league sports that offer great chances to learn a variety of skills during an internship in terms of facilities, ticketing, marketing, social media, and customer relations. Ohio’s large population base also offers tremendous youth sport opportunities, whether through the Ohio High School Athletic Association or the plethora of travel teams in all youth sports today.
Whether you live in, or visit, one of the major cities in Ohio or live in rural Ohio, you are always close to a great sporting opportunity – whether that opportunity is to learn, start a career, move up in your career, cheer on a team, or plan a social outing with family or friends.”
Studying, networking, and job-hunting in larger markets means a wider variety and greater number of opportunities. With Ohio’s large, well-known public universities, high-quality private universities, a large number of professional, semi-pro, collegiate, club teams, and host to a variety of national events annually such as the Memorial Golf Tournament and the Arnold Classic, there are a wide variety of sport management opportunities in all settings. In addition, many parts of Ohio are a short distance from other large sports markets such as Buffalo, Chicago, Detroit, Indianapolis, and Pittsburg.
The Business of Sports in Ohio
The business of sports is very strong in Ohio.
With a significant number of professional sports teams based in Ohio, there are solid opportunities in a number of sports-related industries. Ohio Northern University’s Brian Hofman sees Ohio’s sports economy as a real selling point for the state,
“While everyone has to pick and choose what to do with discretionary funds, sports in Ohio will always be a popular choice for consumers due to the large array of options to choose from each season and because sport is such a huge part of many people’s social identity. Ohio State athletics is a massive driver of opportunities for jobs and an economic engine that drives Columbus. Fans of the other professional teams in Ohio are incredibly passionate and loyal to their teams, so employment is always needed there as well.”
“Also, in more challenging economic times, minor league sports in Ohio offer a great alternative to price-conscious consumers so you can still have an evening out with your family. Due to the number of colleges, universities, and sport organizations in Ohio, the state is an excellent destination for whatever your sporting desires may be because the state has many historical sport attractions in addition to the ability to attend live games.”
“With all this diversity in sport opportunities for fans, the need for employees for these many organizations is also prevalent, so with a strong resume and good work ethic, Ohio is a great place to start, continue, or end your career in sports.”

However, even if your program has a significant amount of experiential learning, it is still recommended to look beyond your college or university and seek out as much experience as possible before graduation.

The People of Ohio
Just as important as the opportunities in sport are in your education and career, accessibility and how welcoming organizations are make for a more fulfilling experience. Compared with other parts of the country, Ohioans are a very laid-back, welcoming bunch. For young people seeking opportunities in the competitive sports industry, finding teams and organizations who will give you the time of day is incredibly important. This factor will likely catch the attention of people who have experienced work environments elsewhere that may not have been altogether pleasant. Considering this together with the fact that Ohio’s cost of living is significantly less than most places in the U.S., Ohio keeps looking better.
Sport Management Degrees in Ohio
Ohio is an excellent state to begin your journey into the sports industry. With many colleges and universities offering sport management degrees, there has never been a better time to find the perfect degree to help you separate yourself from the competition with a quality education. Ohio’s relatively low cost of living, active population and diehard sports culture make it a fun place to live and offers a promising place to start your future.
Sports by Region in Ohio
Ohio has a well rounded sports scene where all major sports can be found competing at the highest level. For most Ohioans, collegiate sports – specifically Ohio State football – are king. Home football games regularly draw over 100,000 fans, which on its own is a testament to how popular it is in the state. Ohio State has won eight College Football National Championships, the most recent being in 2014 under Urban Meyer. The program remains incredibly strong, and Ohio State is a big part of the national conversation every year.
However, professional sports are also very popular throughout the state. LeBron James returned home to help the Cleveland Cavaliers take home the 2016 NBA Championship, and the Cleveland Indians knocked on the door in 2016 as well, losing an exciting World Series. And at long last, the Browns now seem to be set up to contend for years to come with Baker Mayfield behind center and team management looking more stable than it has in decades.
Downstate in Columbus there are a number of sports teams that complement Ohio State’s dominance on the sports scene. The Columbus Crew have now won the MLS Cup Championship twice, including in 2020, and they have earned an excellent following. The Columbus Blue Jackets has now been in the NHL for two decades, and they have been a welcome addition to the Ohio sports scene for two decades.
Cincinnati also has a booming sports scene, which has a well-balanced mix between collegiate and professional sports. Both the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University have very strong sports programs which are a big part of the local sports scene. We spoke to Dr. David Kelley from the University of Cincinnati and he had this to say about Ohio “…it’s a great area to live and between the Reds, the Bengals, FC Cincinnati and such a robust high school sports team, it has a thriving sports scene. I could go on and on and tell you about legendary coaches that got their start here.”
