Why Study a Sport Management Degree?
While “I love sports” is a common refrain from those who want to work in sport, study sport, and pursue a career in the growing sport industry; there is considerably more depth to why one wants to work in sport (employers will want to hear something other than “I love sports” too!).
However, the sport industry is one that does combine an experience that is common to many people who have played a sport at some point in their life or are a fan of a team or sport into adulthood, with a robust industry needing people with relevant knowledge and experience to fill in job roles. For example, the Bureau of Labor Statistics illustrated a projection of 13% occupational growth in the sport industry starting in 2021 and continuing through 2031. This growth includes over 95,000 jobs in sport in the next decade.
Further, Deloitte mentions that 2023 and the upcoming years as a golden age of sport given the growth around the world and further globalization connections among different societies through sport. Major events such as the FIFA World Cup and even technological advances such as increased use of Augmented or Virtual Reality devices spur sport on as an exciting endeavor to be involved in.
All of the growth potential makes studying a Sport Management degree an exciting and worthwhile choice. Having the knowledge of both foundational aspects of the sport industry as well as the emerging areas of the industry from an earned Sport Management degree will help students know which career path they wish to pursue while being prepared to succeed in that path.

Having the knowledge of both foundational aspects of the sport industry as well as the emerging areas of the industry from an earned Sport Management degree will help students know which career path they wish to pursue while being prepared to succeed in that path.”
One last exciting note: while trends such as eSports are common now, this was not the case 10-20 years ago. So, the sport industry is continually evolving in different sports, organizations, and career paths, which can lend itself to a variety of opportunities unique to our industry and discipline that do not exist today but will be paramount to the industry in the future.
Is a Bachelor’s in Sport Management Worth It?
Pursuing any bachelor’s degree will require dedication and a centralized, person-specific motivation for why you are pursuing a specific major. With this being said, a bachelor’s in sport management is one of the more engaging, fun, dynamic, and ever-needed and pertinent majors that you can choose!
It is important to note that a bachelor’s in sport management goes beyond typical fan-speak around the water cooler about last night’s game or the latest social media post by a famous athlete. You will learn the many nuances that come with putting on a sport event, why marketing campaigns or social media posts are worded in specific ways, the financials behind running a sport organization, and be on the cutting edge of emerging areas of sport.

The unique knowledge base and the opportunities that many of the programs offer to network and gain experience in the industry make a bachelor’s in sport management worth it.
“The unique knowledge base and the opportunities that many of the programs offer to network and gain experience in the industry make a bachelor’s in sport management worth it.”
A single piece of advice that rings true year-over-year is to not be set on working in your favorite sport or for your favorite team as chances are high you won’t be able to watch many games. It is a rewarding field with perks such as access to an ever important phenomenon in our society. Those who are interested in learning about the inner workings of sport organizations and work hard tend to be the most successful sport managers/students.
Should I Get a Degree in Sport Management?
The short answer is, yes! If everything that you have read so far sounds like a fun opportunity, you’re not afraid of a challenge, and want to learn more about the “hows and whys questions” of sport, then pursuing a degree in sport management is for you. While a degree in another business area can transfer skills and knowledge to sport, a sport management degree offers you direct access to sport-specific knowledge.
Further and perhaps more importantly, is the direct networking being part of a sport management degree program can offer.
Many of the universities and colleges with programs offer some kind of working relationship through the faculty members of the program with sport industry practitioners. These connections can lead to guest speakers in classrooms, which provides you with direct access and an opportunity to make a good impression with them. They can also lead to a number of networking opportunities, including for class-related assignments with industry partners, internship positions, and eventually for potential job openings after graduation. The North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM) is a great resource for an overview of sport management programs, organizations, and contacts across the industry that might be open to networking.
How to Decide Which Sport Management Degree is the Best Fit
An important first step is to identify where you wish to attend college with a sport management program. Everyone’s situation will be different when it comes to financial aid, scholarships, attending somewhere close to home or further away, and in a specific geographic location.
As mentioned before, many programs now, regardless of location, will have some kind of networking opportunities and relationships with local sport organizations. One aspect to consider is what opportunities are important to you? If you are looking for professional teams or big-time college athletics, then you may want to consider programs in or near cities with such teams.
“If you are looking for professional teams or big-time college athletics, then you may want to consider programs in or near cities with such teams.”
Another question to ask yourself is do you want to attend a larger university or a smaller university? You will also want to ask or research what a typical class size is at specific programs, and know what you are comfortable with. Some larger classes may put more responsibility on you to get to know your professors compared to smaller class sizes.
At the same time, a smaller class size means you may have to speak up more, so there are considerations to weigh for each individual and for each program. There is no right or wrong answer to these questions as they are quite personal. As can be seen by reading through Sports Degrees Online’s library of Expert Interviews in Sport Management, even faculty at universities today had quite different experiences across different programs, different sizes of programs, and locations.
Considerations from our experts include asking the Who/What/When/Where/Why questions as mentioned by Dr. LaQuita Frederick, of Georgetown Univerisity, in her interview with Sports Degrees Online. She mentions also determining your end game as a key to helping you decide which program is the best fit for you.
In her Expert Interview, Dr. Ceyda Mumcu of the University of New Haven mentions the importance of prioritizing experiential learning opportunities. These types of learning opportunities not only provide an avenue to apply what is being learned in a classroom through a different mode of learning – direct experience, but may also help with networking opportunities.
Experiential learning is also a great way to lead to further experience and can be a significant addition to your resume when you eventually get ready to graduate! Dr. Mumcu also notes how having a strategy can be beneficial in this search process. This is particularly true as many of our Experts noted the growth in the number of sport management academic programs.
Having a general idea of what area in sport you wish to pursue and seeing if there are programs with a specific concentration in that area is one strategy to help narrow down the choices. Then, as Dr. Frederick recommended, having your top three or five programs will help you focus where to apply and organize your application materials.
How to Get Into a Sport Management Degree Program
An important step after identifying what sport management programs you are interested in is to look up what their admission requirements are. A general guideline is to be accepted to that specific university or college, but to reach your major classes and declare your major may require further steps.
These steps may occur once you begin college and are tied to your GPA in core classes, earning a certain grade in an introduction to sport management class (or a similar class or classes), gaining a certain level of volunteer experience, or a mix of these factors. Initially, while in high school you will want to check for a) the university or college admissions requirements, and b) any additional requirements that may exist for the sport management program.
There is no universal guideline or requirements followed by all programs, so it is important to be thorough when looking at your top three or five programs. It should be noted that the importance of having a list of three or five (estimated) programs will help focus your application process and also budget your potential application fees! Most universities and colleges have some kind of application fee, so also make note of this ahead of time.
Once you have applied to a university and gain acceptance, it can be beneficial to send a professional email or stop by in person (if possible depending on moving timelines) to whomever the undergraduate program director or coordinator is.
Depending on the program’s curriculum it may be a semester or two before you have a sport management-specific course and get further face time with the faculty. So, get started early and keep an ear out for any guest speaker appearances or any volunteer or networking opportunities that you may be able to get involved with. Otherwise, it’s generally great to just put yourself out there and get to know your classmates. These are all great ways to get started on the right path, and they will all help you distinguish yourself from the crowd.

What Will I Learn in a Sport Management Degree Program?
Generally, a sport management degree program will have courses centered on the “pillar” type of content areas that are important across all of sport. These courses may go by different names across program to program, but some similarities in the core sport courses revolve around:
- Marketing
- Leadership
- Sociology of sport
- Diversity/equity/inclusion in sport
- Law/legal side of sports
- Sport events and facilities
- Communication and media
- Financial aspects of sport
- An organization overview type of course to learn about all parts of a sport organization, and
- Governance
Specific programs will offer additional courses either in their core required courses or through elective courses, and other programs will even have multiple courses in a specific concentration area if you wish to specialize in that specific aspect of sport. There is a growing need to make sure sport management students are learning about:
- Sport analytics
- eSports
- Ethics
- Coaching
- Administration in high school or college (Athletic Directors)
- Technology in sport, and
- International/global sport business.
Looking at these course offerings, chances are you will have at least one or more that stand out that you are most interested in. This is a good sign and can also help you choose which programs you want to apply to- those with concentration areas in your area of interest will make the most sense to apply to and pursue.
If you read those course offerings and are left wondering “well how am I supposed to choose which area I really want to pursue?” then that’s okay too! The purpose of a bachelor’s in sport management is to help you along that journey to discovering where your passions and interests lay.
“If you read those course offerings and are left wondering “well how am I supposed to choose which area I really want to pursue?” then that’s okay too! The purpose of a bachelor’s in sport management is to help you along that journey to discovering where your passions and interests lay.”
This is something that you will learn throughout your college experience as you go through your courses in the classroom, gain experiential learning experiences, volunteer or work at different sport events, and gain general sport experience. Besides the core content listed above, learning what you don’t want to do is just as valuable as learning what you do want to do and specific topics in your courses.
“Besides the core content listed above, learning what you don’t want to do is just as valuable as learning what you do want to do and specific topics in your courses.”
Some general subjects and topics that you will learn in your sport management classes include:
- what makes sport a unique industry and discipline to study and work in
- the sport marketing mix
- how sport branding and sports brands increase their value and consumer relationships (think advertising from Nike or even social media posts by your favorite athlete and their own brand)
- what makes sport agents unique compared to other legal personnel
- how leaders run sport teams but also try to keep fans happy, and
- the emerging areas of sport that tend to capture society’s attention and excitement (think of eSports, virtual and augmented reality, and pickleball as recent examples).
Sport Management Internships & Experiential Learning
If you’re wondering what an internship is or what the value is, then you’re in the right place (or paragraph)! Almost all sport management programs require at least one internship, and an internship acts as a way for you to gain practical experience in the sport industry in some capacity and earn college course credit for the experience.
The value in an internship relates to the experience you gain in a specific role and organization, and also in (hopefully) making a positive impression with whoever your supervisor is to add them to your professional network. In some cases an internship can lead to employment after graduation, although you should ask the place of your internship if this is an option ahead of time as they may not have openings.

In some cases an internship can lead to employment after graduation, although you should ask the place of your internship if this is an option ahead of time as they may not have openings.”
Your internship acts as a way to apply what you have learned in your courses up to that point, and with most internships coming in your last semester or close to your last semester, you will most likely have a wide variety of knowledge across all aspects of sport management.
Entry-level jobs in sport are getting more competitive and so too are internships, especially those with desirable organizations and locations. One way to stand out in the internship application process (this is similar to applying for a job) is to have a stand out resume.
Submitting a stand out resume, having contact with an internship organization and potential supervisor before applying, and potentially having a faculty member recommend you are three ways to put yourself into serious consideration for a top internship. Beyond your courses, GPA, and university on your resume, experiential learning is a great addition to your resume to help you stand out.
As Dr. Michelle Harrolle mentioned in her Expert Interview, experiential learning provides a prime way to…
“go to school, you learn some principles, you learn some concepts, you do amazing projects for our partners in the classroom, and then you get to take that and translate that into real world experience.”
Dr. Michelle Harrolle, UCF
This is a valuable way to make early inroads with organizations associated with your university/college and program, and get your foot in the door for internships.
However, don’t think that the internship experience is a one-way street where you go and run to get everyone else in the office coffee or are stuck with grunt work. At least, that’s not how it should be. Dr. Chris Barnhill noted in his Expert Interview how “both students and employers need to be explicit in setting expectations for the internship experience.” He goes on to encourage students to ask questions of a potential internship site. It is your learning experience, and if the organization does not value interns or it sounds like it will be a disappointing experience, then you should look elsewhere.
While there is pressure to find an internship in a timely manner that works with your degree plan and graduation date, value yourself as a contributor to an organization. This also puts some pressure on making those networking connections earlier in your academic career through experiential learning and volunteer experiences to know ahead of time if an organization may be a place you wish to intern with or not.
Sport Management Clubs & Experience Outside the Classroom
This experience cannot be understated. Hopefully at this point, based on the above points and advice, you see the value in gaining experience outside of the classroom. How do I gain experience outside of the classroom- is probably your next question and it’s a great one to ask now.
In addition to seeking out volunteer opportunities – think through your college’s athletic department, local sport clubs/organizations, local leagues if you’re interested in coaching, and asking your faculty – most programs have a type of Sport Management Majors Club or Student Organization.
These types of clubs tend to be a great way to meet your fellow sport management students across all levels, the clubs tend to have been established and have working relationships with sport organizations and events to gain experience working the events, and can put on events of their own.
I distinctly remember being a freshman and sophomore in my sport management undergraduate program and leaning on those juniors and seniors in the Sport Management club for tips on what classes to take, what events the Club had coming up that would be the most beneficial, and in general finding a sense of community that enhanced my undergraduate experience in a positive way.

Sport Management clubs also tend to have leadership positions within them; and these can be a significant boost to your resume if you’re able to attain one of them. Further, the events and organizations that the Club works with are usually well established, which means that if you enjoy the experience of one particular event or organization, you have an in-road with that organization to reach out and ask if they need help or have internships/job openings/mentors available.
So, not only is the experience itself outside of the classroom a valuable learning tool, it can also be a valuable networking one as well! These are the sort of hidden opportunities that you may not find in a class syllabus or in your degree program. But for those who take the initiative, these opportunities can pay off in considerable ways.
“These are the sort of hidden opportunities that you may not find in a class syllabus or in your degree program. But for those who take the initiative, these opportunities can pay off in considerable ways.”
Other opportunities to gain experience outside of the classroom is to ask around the local sport organizations. Local parks/recreation/sport offices of the city or county are often overlooked as opportunities but they almost always need more people to help. While employment or pay for the work is no guarantee, volunteer work in these areas can further add to your resume and also help you pinpoint an area of interest you may want to pursue as a career.
“While employment or pay for the work is no guarantee, volunteer work in these areas can further add to your resume and also help you pinpoint an area of interest you may want to pursue as a career.”
Additionally, with the continued evolution of technology, if you have a desire to get into sport media, you don’t need to wait to apply for internships or jobs to gain experience here.
Start your own podcast, focus on creating sport related content in a unique way, attend your university’s sporting events and post on outlets your report of the events, even interview fellow students, faculty, athletes or coaches (if possible).
YouTube is an easy way to get your content posted in these types of areas if you are interested in them and give you a competitive advantage to get your name and personal brand established.
Building Your Professional Network
The first and probably easiest place to begin is with your faculty and professors! Most of us have some number of contacts in the sport industry. However, letters of recommendation and similar opportunities first come by making a good impression with each person that you come into contact with. Beyond connecting you to industry personnel, we are also an easy first step to help you answer questions about where you want to work in sport, what kind of career path and how to get started on it, and general sport industry questions.
So, showing up to class, asking good questions, visiting professors during office hours or setting up times to chat with them are all great first steps. From there, the above mentioned opportunities through Sport Management Student Clubs, your experience and (hopefully) good impressions to personnel at sport events your work or volunteer are additional steps to building your professional network.
“showing up to class, asking good questions, visiting professors during office hours or setting up times to chat with them are all great first steps.”
However, be sure to follow up with these personnel! Email them. Connect with them on LinkedIn, or other social media as appropriate. And be sure to stay in contact with them on a consistent-yet-polite schedule to build them into your network. Don’t be afraid to ask some of them to be a mentor for you, either. This is a paramount way to enhance your professional network and most people with experience are happy to play the role of mentor to the next generation of sport managers.
Being a good mentee is just as important as finding a good mentor. Mentors are like cheat codes for your career and development. They can tell you where some of the potential pitfalls are or situations to avoid and how to navigate difficult situations. But the mentee (i.e., you) has to put in the effort to listen, learn, and apply what a mentor is instilling in you.

They can tell you where some of the potential pitfalls are or situations to avoid and how to navigate difficult situations. But the mentee (i.e., you) has to put in the effort to listen, learn, and apply what a mentor is instilling in you.”
A mentee also should be in a consistent yet not overbearing frequency of contact. Being respectful of a mentor’s time will help to enhance this relationship. Asking them good and genuine questions will also be helpful as doing so lets the mentor know you are serious about the relationship and it also helps guide them on what to help you with.

Don’t be afraid to ask someone to be your mentor – this can be a professor to start, someone in the industry who you have met a few times, and even look to your peers who you admire and want to be like. Mentorship can be formal and informal, and both types are valuable in your development. A mentorship relationship can then also help you maximize your network. When the time comes to find an internship or job, they will be another person in your corner to help you find the right situation, offer a letter of recommendation, or even leverage their own network in your favor.
“When the time comes to find an internship or job, they will be another person in your corner to help you find the right situation, offer a letter of recommendation, or even leverage their own network in your favor.”
Quick note on letters of recommendation or listing a reference: Ask the person first! You may be surprised, but depending on the impression you left on a specific person, you may not want them to write a letter or be a reference. Ask them if they are willing, and if it would be a positive letter or reference. Don’t assume that the person will always have time or know to check their email or phone for contact from someone they are not expecting. So asking and giving them a heads up will do wonders for everyone involved. If they say yes, send along an updated resume and job description to help them focus on what to highlight on your behalf.
Career Outlook for Sport Management Graduates
There are a variety of exciting careers to pursue in sport. The typical entry level positions in the professional leagues in the US and big-time college athletics include ticket sales representatives, game day operations personnel, field and facility operations, marketing, and event management.
There are additional career paths in specific areas of sport organizations beyond professional teams and college athletic departments. These include organizations such as the governing bodies for sport leagues, sport agencies, sport marketing firms, sport psychology practices, and analytics companies who perform analytics across different sports.
Additionally, eSports continues to grow in popularity and positions continue to evolve in this area of the industry. Beyond entry level positions, those working in sport often want to attain front office positions. Another constant area to consider is sport commissions; these are found throughout cities and areas with an aim to bring in sport and entertainment events to a specific city. These positions typically combine multiple areas of sport management from event management, sales, legal, and marketing, to name a few.
In addition to the Bureau of Labor Statistics data cited at the top, the Bureau classifies various sport related positions under the Agents and Business Managers of Artists, Performers, and Athletes category. Keeping in mind that entry level positions in sport tend to start off with lower pay due to the high demand for positions with sport teams, the following data illustrate the potential in the sport industry across a few career paths: agents are noted with an annual mean wage of $102,070; spectator sports (broad definition of positions) has an annual mean wage of $88,580; legal services have an annual mean wage of $94,220, and the general annual salary wage range in this sector spans $35,840 on the low end to $190,500 on the high end. (BLS Website)
The takeaway from this data is to note that entry level positions in sport organizations, especially for professional sport teams in the US are on the low end. Many of my industry contacts have stated how their initial job or jobs were many hours for low pay; however, the payoff comes when one’s dedication to their career and path in sports leads to greater opportunities. These opportunities can sometimes be in the same organization or league, but often various opportunities open up across sectors of the sport industry.

After Graduation: What to Expect
As noted in the first section of this guide, job market expectations will vary depending on what type of sport organization you are aiming to join and what area you want to work in. Most ticket sales jobs are the typical entry-level positions for professional teams and they do not pay a lot to start off. It can be a way to move up in the organization over time and if you are successful.
However, if you do not want to go this route, then having experiences (internships, experiential learning, volunteer work, people in your network with positions that you want) that align with your area will be key. Otherwise, human resources or hiring managers will have a hard time deciphering what area it is exactly that you want to work in. Depending on the area and the sport organization, your initial pay may vary but as mentioned earlier, the Bureau of Labor Statistics does show significant job growth in the sport industry.
The good news from this trend is that there will be more job opportunities in the coming years and the potential for new positions will increase too. Just think, back in the early 2000’s, there were no social media director positions in existence. What new positions might we see created to keep up with sport industry trends in the next 10 years? Only time will tell.
The job market in the sports industry will always be competitive because after all, a lot of people love sports! That also includes those who didn’t choose sport management as their major. So, making sure that you are intentional about each of the key steps of gaining experience, getting a relevant internship, and leveraging your network. Executing each of these steps while earning your sport management degree will help you stand out from the competition.
Further, as many sport industry personnel have shared with me and my classes: their careers have taken many twists and turns, so don’t be afraid to change organizations or areas of interest after some time if the right opportunity arises. (A good mentor will help guide you to know when an opportunity is the right opportunity, so you don’t need to make these decisions on your own). There are many people working in sport who have taken opportunities from one organization to another to another. Some even switch sports or geographic locations.
The career path in sport is a dynamic one. It is part of what makes it exciting to work in sport but it can also be intimidating. One way to make it an exciting avenue is to follow the steps in this guide and also follow the recommendations of those in the program that you do choose! All of the sport management programs were designed to help YOU, the next generation of sport managers.

What Kind of Graduate Programs Do Sport Management Degree Holders Pursue?
This is a good question for you to consider and the answer here is “it depends.” By the time you finish your bachelor’s degree in sport management you will hopefully have a more focused area of interest that you want to make your career path. If you do, then pursuing a graduate degree in this area will be the most beneficial for you. If you do not have a specific area yet, then you may either want to wait to pursue a graduate degree or take a broader approach in a degree program adjacent to sport.
For example, a Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) is a common graduate degree for those who earned an undergraduate degree in sport management to pursue. The MBA can offer a good complement to the business principles in sport while offering you the chance to learn more about the management practices. Some MBA programs also offer concentrations, so if you do happen to take to a specific area, you may be able to add a concentration to further learn and distinguish yourself.
Be sure to check out our MBA in Sport Management Guide for more about these programs.
For those who have a specific area in mind or those who are thinking ahead of potential specific areas to study at the graduate level, here are some typical graduate degrees people pursue after their sport management degree:
- A graduate sport management degree with a specific concentration or specialty (such as analytics, marketing, law);
- A business related graduate degree such as an MBA or even more specifically such as a graduate degree in marketing, advertising, economics, or finance;
- A law degree (JD) for those wanting to become a sport agent or focus on the legal aspects of sport;
- Sport administration (for those wishing to pursue an athletic director or similar career);
- Media;
- Communications; or
- A graduate certificate program in a specific area. This latter avenue is usually common when your current employer may want you to go back to school to gain specific knowledge or skills. They may deem a full graduate degree as unnecessary if a certificate program exists.
Lastly, if you are thinking of getting into the research side of the sport management discipline, then looking at a graduate degree with a thesis option to help you determine if a PhD is something you wish to pursue can be beneficial.
Sport Management Degree FAQs
Sport management is a multi-disciplinary field that encompasses the operations and business of sports. The field of sport management includes business fundamentals like analytics and marketing, as well as sport-specific courses like event and facilities management. It also includes ethical and legal issues in sports.
Yes, the field of sport management is incredibly broad, and there are a wide variety of jobs available for sport management graduates.
Generally speaking, internships are a very important part of a sport management degree. Many programs include a semester-long internship as part of the program, but many of the experts who we have spoken with recommend getting as much real-world experience as possible, either during breaks between the semester, immediately after graduation, or by volunteering at events during free time. Always arrive early, stay late, and work hard, because the connections made during your internship experiences will likely be very important when you begin applying for jobs. To learn more about internships, visit our Sport Internships Guide.
Without question, there are many people working in the sports industry who did not graduate with a degree in sport management. However, it can also be said that a degree in sport management prepares graduates for success in the business of sports better than any other undergraduate degree. The vast majority of sport management programs provide students with real world experience – often in a field or a role of interest –which can provide graduates with excellent references and a real sense of which jobs they enjoy and excel at.
Potentially! However, as detailed above, just enjoying an aspect of sport does not equate to a career passion. More importantly to emphasize is that working in sport does not necessarily allot much time to actually watch the sport or team you are working for. And for those who like sport betting you will need to read your employment contract as many organizations prohibit their employees from engaging in betting.
It can, depending on the program that you are enrolled in or looking to apply to. Some sport management programs include coaching classes or even coaching concentrations or minors. However, you will want to check while researching potential programs. You will also want to see what the coaching requirements are in the state that you are wanting to coach in as some states have different requirements for being licensed or have different requirements for the level of coaching (interscholastic, college, etc.).
No college major in itself is “easy”. All professors will be aiming to teach you specific knowledge and skills to be successful in the sport industry and specific areas of sport. These can be difficult depending on a variety of factors. There are complex problems that sport managers encounter regularly, and the learning process in college of how to handle these complex problems is not easy.
In short, the answer is yes. Our discipline is younger than some of the other disciplines that we tend to draw from such as business, psychology, and sociology. However, as more people have majored in sport management and continue to work in the field, they are blazing a trail for you to follow and blaze your own trail. Take a look around a sporting event, TV channels, local businesses, or social media trends whenever there is a major sport game on and you will see just how impactful sport is and continues to be in our society. We are one of the few disciplines where the product is simultaneously created and consumed; which adds to the allure and fan excitement. Even those who are not fans of sport tend to hear about or talk casually about the major sport events throughout the year.
