What is it like to live in Oregon?

Oregon is overflowing with natural beauty. Throughout the state, the views and scenery are breathtaking. The Cascade Mountain Range cuts through the middle of the state (North to South). This elicits incredible views of the mountains and also some fun mountain sports! Mountain biking is huge all over the state, especially Bend, Eugene, Ashland, and Redmond. The winter is cold, but with the cold comes amazing powder on Mt. Hood, Mt. Bachelor, Mt. Ashland, and the Willamette Pass, perfect for skiing and snowboarding.

On top of this, there are amazing rivers and lakes perfect for kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddleboard, and fishing. Along the West side of Oregon are almost 400 miles of beautiful coastline. Even along the coastline, the features and landscapes change quite dramatically…with both sandy and rocky beaches, huge rock formations, sand dunes, and cliffs. The recreation and outdoor industry are big in Oregon thanks to its varied landscape and strong economic production.

Working in Oregon

Oregon is famous for being home to Nike- one of the biggest companies in all of sports. Nike has over 70,000 employees and is located in Beavertown, Oregon. Depending on what you are looking for, there is plenty of opportunity throughout the state. There are minor league sports teams, recreational facilities, healthcare facilities, sport products manufacturers, and even some exciting sports tech companies. Portland’s tech scene is growing fast, and many startups have recruited talent from Silicon Valley and are building some amazing products. In August of 2021, Sport Source launched a new application to connect athletes and coaches to gyms and sports facilities.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics calculates the average wage across Arts, Design, Entertainment, Sports, and Media Occupations is over $60,000/yr. is over $60,000/yr. Another big benefit of living and working in Oregon is there is no sales tax! This can help your paycheck go further. Also, there is legislation that mandates that the minimum wage be adjusted annually in accordance with any increases in the U.S. Consumer Price Index. Even an internship paying minimum wage is a fair and livable wage and if you are in Portland, it will be at least $14/hr.

Education in Oregon

Oregon’s graduation rate has increased even with distance learning and the Covid-19 pandemic. Colt Gill, the Director of Oregon’s Department of Education was quoted saying “Seeing greater growth in graduation rates for most students of color, students with disabilities and students navigating poverty than the state as a whole means our continued efforts to foster equity and excellence for all Oregon students continues to yield positive results.” 

As for higher education, there are prestigious colleges scattered throughout the state. The state colleges and universities of Oregon feature affordable tuition, and smaller private schools that offer specialized degree programs and other perks.
