In such a broad field of study prospective students should seek out as many different professional experiences as possible during as early as possible.
For undergraduate students, these experiential opportunities may come as a structured part of your program or as internships. However, it may require extra initiative from the individual to find opportunities outside of the classroom. Professors are sure to know of departments and offices that have experience hosting volunteer participants.
Graduate students would be wise to seek out experience in different professional contexts before pursuing a specialized advanced degree. Whether you are curious about a path into academia, research, or in an applied setting, there is no better way to gain meaningful experience than by doing the work and living days and weeks in the life.
