“New Jersey offers an abundance of sport employment options; we live in a sport mecca. New Jersey alone has six major league teams, a dozen or so semi-pro and minor league teams, an array of collegiate athletic departments DI, DII, and DIII, high school athletics, recreation, and private facility opportunities. We have horse racing, sports betting, Special Olympics, the USA Equestrian Team Foundation, and USA Golf Association all located in NJ. Moreover, with NJ Transit, students can access teams, league offices, and network (TV and radio) sport opportunities in New York. South Jersey students have access to sport opportunities in the Philadelphia area too.

Why Study Sports Management in New Jersey?
Many may be surprised to know that some New York teams actually play in New Jersey. The New York Jets and Giants both play their games at MetLife Stadium in Rutherford, New Jersey. Also, the New York Red Bulls play at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey.
New Jersey also has its own professional teams, such as the New Jersey Devils and Sky Blue FC. There are also a number of semi-professional teams in various sports which we highlight below. On top of that, New Jersey is the 11th most populous state in the country and there are plentiful opportunities for sports-related positions at the high school and municipal level.
There are also prestigious colleges and universities like Princeton, Rutgers, Monmouth, and Seton Hall. Not to mention the other Division II and Division III programs in the state. All of these sports teams need somewhere to play as well. There are at least ten major sports venues, arenas, and racetracks which require facility management and have their own marketing and management teams.
On top of these sports teams, organizations, and institutions, there are also sports media, marketing, and other sports-related businesses scattered throughout the state. New Jersey is also the most densely populated state in the U.S. and therefore has a lot of opportunities at the municipal and high school level for people looking to break into the sports industry. In fact, New Jersey is 9th in the nation in terms of total number of high schools, with over 250 private high schools and over 600 public high schools. Professor Lubisco sees this as a huge strength of the state,
“New Jersey is home to 66 institutions of higher education who have sport or recreation programs. There are 565 municipalities that have recreation programs. As I mentioned previously, six major league teams, a dozen or so semi-pro and minor league teams. With 21.8% of the population under the age of 18, we have hundreds of private sport facilities and camps in NJ. There are plenty of opportunities to obtain sport internships and employment in NJ.

There are also sports gambling and casinos throughout the state. New Jersey was the second state in the country to legalize sports gambling. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed a sports gambling bill into law in 2018 and said that “casinos in Atlantic City and [New Jersey’s] racetracks throughout our state can attract new business and new fans, boosting their own long-term financial prospects. This is the right move for New Jersey and it will strengthen our economy.”
The Sports Economy in New Jersey
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average wage for someone working in Arts, Design, Entertainment, Sports, and Media occupations is almost $70,000/yr, there are more than 6,000 coaches and scouts employed throughout the state, and the entire state’s GDP is $635 Billion. As reported by the IMF, that would put New Jersey’s economy at #23 in the world…just ahead of Sweden.
Despite the cancellation of many sporting events in 2020, there was over $6 billion wagered in sports betting in New Jersey. That number has only gone up since Covid has faded into the background and the world has returned to normal, and is expected to rise for years to come.
As a Professor of Sport Management at Fairleigh Dickinson University, Dr. Robyn Lubisco has already been seeing the effects of sports gambling on the sports economy in New Jersey,
“Overall, the sports economy in NJ is strong. The biggest sport industry in NJ is sport betting. Last year, NJ handled $10.9 billion in bets and saw a revenue of $816 million. I have seen an uptick of students applying for jobs at FanDual, BetMGM, Draft Kings, etc.

Media, Marketing, and Athlete Representation Opportunities in New Jersey
According to U.S. News & World Report, New Jersey ranks #19 in terms of opportunity and giving its citizens the freedom of upward mobility. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that Advertising and Promotions Managers earned an average salary of over $175,000. While there are no statistics available for those managers working in sports, it is clear that the New Jersey labor market has a high wage ceiling for talented managers and marketers in this space.
There are many sports agencies and other marketing firms in New Jersey, which serve both the New York and Philadelphia markets. A quick search on LinkedIn or Indeed will show dozens, if not hundreds of jobs available. Many firms choose to operate out of New Jersey while serving clients who live in New York so they can take advantage of less expensive office space and tax liabilities.
Starting September 1, 2021, student-athletes will be permitted to earn compensation through endorsement contracts or employment, and can hire professional and legal representation. This is a huge shift from previous restrictions on college athletes, and will certainly allow for more employment in this sector. New Jersey has a number of major college programs in Division I, II, and III and their athletes will certainly benefit from this new legislation.

New Jersey is a hotbed for minor league baseball and the sport is insanely popular throughout the state. Most residents are fans of either the Phillies, Yankees, or Mets at the professional level, but there are a number of development and minor league teams scattered throughout the state. The minor league teams serve as a great family-friendly destination that is affordable, entertaining and a lot of fun! Collectively, these minor league teams have brought in millions of spectators over the years, and are here to stay in New Jersey!

New Jersey Basketball Teams
Basketball is big at the high school and college level in New Jersey, and there a number of notable D-1 and semi-professional teams in the state. Seton Hall and Princeton have long been nationally recognized programs known to make noise in the NCAA tournament, helping to put New Jersey basketball on the map. The Rutgers Scarlet Knights Men’s Basketball team ended their 30 year drought of NCAA tournament appearances and earned a 10-seed spot in the 2021 March Madness tournament. The sport is big in the state and according to FieldLevel there are over 20,000 Men’s and Women’s basketball teams.

New Jersey Hockey Teams
Hockey is one of only two major league sports that are officially branded as New Jersey teams. The New Jersey Devils have won the Stanley Cup 3 times, and have a very engaged fanbase. College and amateur leagues are also scattered throughout the state. The biggest rivals of the Devils, the Philadelphia Flyers, have expanded and renovated their training facility in Voorhees, New Jersey in 2018, and there are many reasons to believe that the sport will continue to grow in New Jersey.

Football in New Jersey
While the New York Giants and New York Jets officially represent New York, they actually play home games at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. This is a great source of revenue and job opportunities for the state of New Jersey. At lower levels of play, there is a huge number of teams. Both Princeton and Rutgers are fun to watch and have avid fan bases. In addition, there are many opportunities for employment with high school and amateur teams in the state across the state. The game at the high school level is set to quickly expand as New Jersey officially started girls’ football games in April of 2021.

Beyond the City – Recreation Management in New Jersey
New Jersey, while being the most densely populated state in the country, is working hard to preserve its available land and make good use of it for recreational and agricultural, purposes, as well as conserving the biodiversity in the state. According to New Jersey’s Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan, there are 1,355,035 acres of public open space in New Jersey. And “…the state shall continue to make the protection of water resources, preservation of biodiversity and the provision of park and recreation opportunities statewide priorities.“
Though sometimes overlooked, New Jersey also hosts a number of sailing regattas which is another significant niche in the sporting world. There are also a number of summer camps, golf courses and learning facilities (like the state-of-the-art Top Golf facilities), and facilities like Red Line Athletics that are redefining fitness and training. It’s easy to see that a Sport Management degree in New Jersey can be a very worthwhile and rewarding career path for people who are passionate about public policy and recreation.
