Baseball in Illinois
According to a recent study, Baseball is the most popular sports in Illinois. This makes sense as there are two MLB teams in Chicago, and a very storied history of the sports in Illinois. The Chicago Cubs (then the Chicago White Stockings) played their first game in 1870 against the Union Club of St. Louis. One of the first examples of sports sponsorship can be seen in the renaming of home stadium to Wrigley Field in 1927, which was done to advertise the chewing gum brand still in business today.
The Chicago White Sox were originally from Sioux City and were known as the Cornhuskers. They played their first game in Chicago in 1901. Since that time a lot has changed in the game of Baseball and both teams are a pillar of sports in the city.
