Sports Careers in Alabama

While Alabama does not have a top-tier professional sports team in the major sports (basketball, football, baseball, or hockey), the state still features a major league sports culture. Alabama is home to two of the most storied programs in all of college sports, namely the University of Alabama and Auburn University. Additionally, Alabama is home to a number of minor league and semi-professional teams that can be a great starting point for people looking to build a career in the sports industry. There are seven semi-professional football teams, three minor league baseball teams, two professional soccer teams, and two hockey teams.
Also, the economy in Alabama is healthy by several metrics. Its unemployment rate is just above 3%. Its low cost of living, coupled with its low property tax rate can make Alabama a very attractive place to live and work.

Life in Alabama

Alabama can be a great state to call home, and is a popular destination for tourists and young professionals alike. It has beautiful beaches along its 80 miles of coastline on the Gulf of Mexico. With a temperate climate that doesn’t see much of a winter chill, Alabama has more ‘beach days’ than all but a few places in the USA.
When Alabamans are in need of a break from hot weather or longing to see some mountains, it is easy to escape to the mountains to the north. The Appalachian Mountain Range’s most southern point is in central Alabama, and there are other mountains like the Cheaha Mountain and Monte Sano that have great hiking, viewpoints, rivers, and lakes that can provide a breath of fresh air.

Another highlight for people living in Alabama is the food. Alabama is home to legendary barbeque, and other dishes like grits, okra, and other southern cuisine give Alabama a distinct food culture. Not only food, but local craft breweries are popping up all over the state and this is providing residents with fun places to gather, eat and drink throughout the state.
On top of all of this, the cost of living in Alabama is exceptionally low. Anniston was ranked by the NASDAQ as one of the least expensive urban areas to live in. This means your dollar goes farther and it is easier to save a higher percentage of your salary. In recent years, many young professionals have moved to Alabama, taking advantage of some of the most affordable housing markets in the country. The Huntsville area remains in the top 10 emerging housing markets in the country, according to the Wall Street Journal.
